Lately I’ve been staying up way too late researching vinyl plank flooring options for our home. Our whole home. All 1520sf of it. With a very busy little one wanting to help with EVERYTHING, do we DIY or hire a pro?

Initial reaction

Originally, Costco looked like a pretty good deal. It works out to be about $2/sf. However, after examining it up close and personal, I’m not so keen on it anymore. The top layer looked paper thin and one reviewer wrote that it dents and scratches easily. We have a monster of a sofa. I’d hate to spend the money to replace the floor only to have it scratched to shit in the first year because my toddler likes to play.

Then I came across Floor Critics and read what they had to say.

That led me to read more about Flooret Modin. The company’s transperancy is better than the others I was checking out. And no VOCs! That’s a pretty good selling point for me. Not to mention the wearability and scratch resistance is double what the competitors offer in the same price range.

The only thing is, their $3.95/sf price tag is probably in US dollars. That will increase the overall price by a LOT. Even if we do the installation ourselves. *cringe*

All that said, I still want to order samples.

Contractor? What’s that gonna cost us?

Now for the question of hiring a contractor. So far we have come to expect everything here to cost aproximately double, being in a remote little mountain hamlet.

We are on a budget, people. I’m all for investing in quality, but we have to draw the line somewhere and I don’t like getting ripped off! Seriously, who does.

I haven’t even started to look at availability for someone local to do the job. Frankly, I’m a little scared to.

When we make a decision, we’ll let you know. Stay tuned.
